Time of the Storm

In 2020, the sudden outbreak of Coronavirus has a profound impact on the politics and economy of various countries. The continuous outbreaks in countries have brought great destructive power to human society and has a great impact on firefighting work. In this view, the author interviewed the head of a fire department to understand the impact of the epidemic situation on firefighting work, team management, as well as the positive actions taken by the companies to ensure the successful practice of firefighting work and firefighters’ safety and stability.
The Impact of the Covid-19

The epidemic has had multiple effects on my work and life.

Firstly, in the aspect of working, the exact task of the firefighters changed a lot. Due to the pandemic, the pace of social production and life slowed down slowed down a lot. Many enterprises stopped production, and the number of simple fire rescue tasks decreased. However, due to the need of prevention and control of the epidemic situation, companies and families increased the risk of fire crisis by frequently improper storage and use of disinfectants. Such rescue missions even raised a lot.

Secondly, the firefighting department pay more attention on the individual protection and disinfection for equipment during the daily work. Now, the fire truck equipped with masks and disinfectants. To avoid the infection, all firefighters should wear masks during the whole process of the work. When they come back to the department, they also needed to meet the strict standard on self-disinfection and equipment disinfection.

Third, the regular management of firefighting teams is affected by the epidemic. As a closed management department, fire brigade is affected by epidemic situation and needed to pay more attention to prevention in daily management. First of all, the fire brigade has carried on the strict camp management, including strictly forbids the outside unit personnel to enter, the unit staff must measure the body temperature before entering. Secondly, the fire brigade stops personnel going out and taking leave. Third, the fire brigade reduced the gathering of personnel. Do not hold large-scale personnel meetings, daily training to increase staff spacing, do not carry out more personnel to participate in the training of collective projects. Take time to eat in the canteen, reduce the density of dining staff. Finally, the fire brigade strengthened the daily disinfection of the camp and disinfected the camp twice a day.

Touched Heart

There are so much touching stories happened during the pandemic. I knew some of them online, and some other happened just around me. The stories of the people I am familiar with shocked me the most – A doctor colleague’s father passed away in other province. He chose not to leave since he worried a lot to add more pressure and depression for the colleagues and organization. The worry and love toward his dad was hidden deep in heart and converted to the motivation to work even harder to prevent more death.

When being asked what’s his strongest wish after the pandemic, he said: “ I wish I could run without wearing mask.”
