The Project

The COVID-19 China Project is an oral history project organized and completed by a group of high school and college students of Chinese heritage from China, South East Asia, the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Voice of Witness project in San Francisco, we conducted interviews with a wide range of witnesses who shared the same memories about how the outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the lives of Chinese people’s lives, and collected their stories.

This project started in March 2020 and attracted over 100 student participants. A total number of 55 interviews were completed and 34 complete stories were submitted. More than 20 volunteers have helped translate those stories from Chinese to English and built the website to publish those stories online. This is our record of what happened during the pandemic in China and how the common people reacted to it.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has greatly affected everyone’s life in the entire world. Although it started in China, this outbreak has been a global issue now.We believe that the effort that every country has made to combat it is worth remembering, and it is important to appreciate those who fought and survived the outbreak.
